Day Three: “The Seasons” (Lab Day)

Objectives: To discover why we experience seasons here on Earth.

Materials: 4 globes, 4 flashlights, glue

Opening: I will explain to the class that today is a lab day and they will be moving to different stations set up around the room to determine the answer to our focus question of the day “What causes the seasons?”. Prior to beginning the lab I will have the students each come up with their own hypothesis as to why they believe seasons occur and record that hypothesis in their scientists notebook.

Engagement: The students will move from station to station answering the focus question at each station and recording their observations. They will also be required to record claims and evidence at each station. The stations will include: Northern and Southern Hemispheres, Rotation Revolution and Orbits, Winter and Summer Shadows, Rotation, Summer Solstice, Winter Solstice, and Vernal/Autumnal Equinox. All observations, evidence, claims, and handouts will be presented clearly in their scientists notebook. To assess their performance on this lab activity the students will complete a fill in the blank sheet that asks them to refer back to their lab notes to answer/fill in all questions.

Closing: For homework the students will be asked to draw and label a picture that shows the Earths revolution about the Sun that explains the seasons.
